For the first time in our country, the Indian customs department after obtaining permission from the Ministry of External Affairs have seized 30 kg worth gold from the diplomatic baggage.
As per reports, the baggage seized by the officials at the Trivandrum airport which were meant for the staff of United Arab Emirates (UAE) consulate in Kerala reached the airport two days back and the seize was finalised a few hours back on Sunday.
An official statement in regards to smuggling of gold pertaining to diplomatic baggage and immunity is yet to be made, but the case of staff being involved and smuggling of 30 kg gold is very big. Diplomatic baggage normally is not under scrutiny, but the investigation is still underway as to who tipped the officials.

The baggage as per the Trivandrum airport sources said that the bagged contained PPE hospital kits, which are being transferred through diplomatic channels. The custom commissioner of Kerala Sumit Kumar said that the 30 kg worth quantity gold can go up, the investigation is underway and 1 person has been detained, and the lookout for 2 others is being conducted.
As per sources, the gold was hidden among household items and wouldn’t have been detected if definite information wasn’t available. As the prices of gold have skyrocketed, the smuggling cases all around have increased too, and this is one of the largest seizures of our country.
As most consignments from abroad under diplomatic channels enjoy immunity under the Vienna convention, proper permission was required by the Ministry of External Affairs to conduct this kind of raid.
