As per the latest reports, the diesel price has crossed the petrol price in Delhi. Another bad news for people as now diesel will cost them Rs 79.8 per litre and petrol Rs 79.7 per litre. The difference is quite low but this has happened for the first time that diesel is costlier than petrol.
The reason behind the increased diesel price is that oil companies have been increasing the prices continuously from the past 17 days and now the diesel price will cost more than petrol across the country. It should be noted that the prices of diesel will rise in some states too because of the taxes. However, there are still states where diesel is cheaper as compared to petrol because of lower taxes but the gap will shrink soon.
Delhi: Diesel costlier than petrol for the first time
As per government data, diesel cost Rs 40.2 in June 2012 and the price of petrol was 71.1 per litre and now the gap has totally vanished in Delhi. In Delhi, taxes on petrol is 64 percent and diesel is 63 percent but there are some states where taxes on diesel is still quite low.
In Mumbai, the tax on diesel price is low as it is usee by transporters and farmers. In 2012, petrol in Mumbai cost Rs 76.4 per litre and diesel cost Rs 31.1 per litre which has changed to Rs 45.2 percent.
