The tragedy happened on August 15, 2016, in which 16 people lost their lives. The 21 Bihar policemen who were sacked include sub-inspectors, five assistant sub-inspectors, and 13 constables.

The Gopalganj hooch tragedy 2016 was one of the main incidents reported in Bihar after the government imposed the total prohibition of alcohol consumption in April that year. The incident took place in Khajurbanni locality and 15 policemen, including the SHO of that town, were suspended earlier on the charge of carelessness on the duty.

Initially, the death of 16 people were considered mysterious as their postmortem report did not highlight anything later the Bihar government confirmed that 16 men died after consuming poisonous liquor.
After inquiry, it was clarified that the people who died in Gopalganj hooch tragedy 2016 consumed alcohol from the Khajurbani area where people use a flower called Mahua to make liquor. The 16 people died at night August 15.
Later when the news broke out the Bihar government suspended the police staff of that area and investigation regarding the incident was made.
