Every year the World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14 to honor scientist Karl Landsteiner who won a Noble award for his ABO blood group system discovery. June 14th is Karl Landsteiner’s birth anniversary.

Blood donation is also good for your body as it can help you protect your heart for example donating blood at regular intervals reduces the viscosity of blood which helps in maintaining the blood flow and prevents organ failure or heart attack. Blood donation also helps in cholesterol reduction, it keeps the iron level in control and regulates BP.
But it should be noted that only people are fit and healthy can donate blood. Like people with minimum hemoglobin of 11 and a minimum weight of 110 lbs. People aged from 18 to 65 years fits the criteria. Before donating blood one should intake a lot of fluids and if a person has a fever or any infection they are not allowed to donate blood.
Every year a theme is set for World Blood Donor Day and this time it is ‘safe blood saves lives’.
